Newsletter June 2015

This month marks a full year of publishing the EMR Aware Newsletter, culminating with all issues now being available on our website www.emraware.com. Having thus provided an overview of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and the state of play between concerned citizens, industry, and Government regulators, we are now changing to quarterly distribution, with our next issue to be released in September. This will allow more time to be devoted to our own research and specific community projects. All readers are invited to continue sending in items for possible inclusion in forthcoming issues.

Note that our content has also shifted toward scientific evidence and legal perspectives. This is the arena in which will ultimately be achieved the goal of more stingent exposure limits and safer technology. Accordingly, we have adopted standardised headings for each category of EMR-related device. Be sure to also check out our list of organisations for additional sources of information, many of which offer explanatory text for readers new to the subject.

Pink Boxes - Open for Business

Over recent years, several IT interests in Mullumbimby NSW tried unsuccessfully to set up their own version of free public Wi-Fi in our CBD's. Members of the community, and some Councillors, opposed this, primarily on the basis of health concerns over additional and involuntary microwave exposure. The instigators are now insinuating that, had the scheme succeeded, Telstra would have been forced to abandon its own aspirations. This is highly unlikely since a plan to blanket Australia with hotspots had already been announced. In fact, that was one of the reasons cited for not needing a separate, locally operated network.

The user dynamics of the Telstra service also brings home the point that "free" Wi-Fi, via an enterprise gateway, is not really free. It typically exacts the price of having to wade through logins, ads and surveys to get online. Telstra Grooms Brunswick Heads

As advertsed in our local newspaper, Telstra would "love to meet you" on Thursday 28 May from 9am to 3pm at Terrance Reserve in Brunswick Heads. We suspect this event has to do with paving the way for a new phone tower, and countering bad publicity surrounding Byron Shire Council's recent rejection of the one near Ocean Shores Public School. No doubt any shred of positive response extracted from visitors will be used as a form of "community consent" to justify further expansion. Residents concerned about the ever-increasing levels of microwaves in our living environment are urged to attend and make their views known.

Towers Around Maleny

The NBN "community information session" in Maleny QLD on 14 May, attracted 150 concerned residents. While the reps failed to fully address the questions on notice, here are the answers they did provide. http://www.emraware.com/documents/responses_nbn_maleny.pdf

On the occasion, NBN announced new antennae in Montville, Bald Knob and Witta, maybe hoping to portray themselves as an unstoppable force. These will be located upon existing facilities, thereby rendering them "low impact" and exempt from a Development Application. It appears the Witta tower is receiving this treatment because no landowner there was convinced to sign a Contract. Most had been served Notice by activists that the insurance required of them by NBN may be unobtainable due to policy exclusions on EMR-related injury. In light of this, discussion is being held with Telstra regarding the legal implications of them co-locating the NBN. One local paper conducted an exit poll and could find no one who was in favour of any of NBN's concepts. On the same day, the Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands group provided a real information programme with displays and presentations in the room under the main hall.

"We would recommend that any community wishing to use these contact Bob first. This is because the Notices have been carefully crafted to conform with all legal requirements, and any changes could render them ineffective. We can report that another community has verified much of what we have discovered. One landowner who signed an NBN Contract had a stand up row with them at a community meeting saying that he understood that it was NBN who insured against risk of harm to the community. NBN confidently informed him that, since signing the Contract, he was now the owner of this risk and public liability (which is uninsurable). They also tried to get a quote for insurance and, like our group, discovered that you cannot".

Yet another 35 metre NBN tower is being proposed within Maleny itself, about 100 metres from a public hospital and a retirement village. This Council-owned property already sports Telstra and other antennae on its 20 metre high water tank. On 23 May, there was a rally there (see photo above) attended by 50 persons. Opponents contend this siting violates Sunshine Council’s Telecommunications Facility Code, as well as Scenic Overlays within the 2014 Planning Scheme. At least one Councillor advised she will support objections to this site.

An additional site at Peachester, declared at the 14 May session, is to be within a 224 square metre block of land, for which has been requested a Road Closure to extract it from a large reserve. There are about 40 houses within 400 metres of this site. This also appears not to comply with the aforementioned Council Code.

Council staff had been requested, via the RTI Act, to provide copies of all documents pertaining to its prior dealings with NBN. This cost $300, but any item judged not to be "in the public interest" was studiously omitted. An appeal has now been lodged. "Silent" installation of smart (AMI capable) water and gas meters is in full swing in Victoria and parts of NSW. While the sales pitch and proffered research may look convincing, faith in these unorthodox devices should not eclipse common sense precautionary measures. One thing is for certain. They do not, by any conventional standard, reduce ambient EMR levels. Given the reputation of regulatory bodies such as the TGA and FDA to vigorously attack uncertified health claims, availability of these items in the open marketplace remains a mystery. We suspect it has to do with keeping alive the myth that the human race can somehow coexist safely with ever-increasing levels of EMR.

One suggestion for signs to alert members of the public to the presence of Wi-Fi. It's about freedom of choice and informed consent.
