Newsletter December - January 2015-16

This free bimonthly newsletter is produced by EMR Aware, a group of concerned citizens based in Northern NSW Australia. It is intended to distribute, in the public interest, the latest information on the health, environmental and social impacts of electro-technologies. Since the primary objective is to encourage a fair and balanced discussion, emphasis here is placed upon aspects of the topics at hand that are not widely acknowledged by industry and their government regulators.

As was the case with tobacco, asbestos and lead, education and consumer sentiment grounded in science is a key to overcoming the intransigence of commercial interests. An increasing number of self-styled activists are promoting items advertised to protect against various forms of EMR. It is reported that some have deep connections with the telecommunications industry. They may target communities that express significant levels of concern, thus capitalising upon prior awareness raised by local opposition groups.

Even nationwide stores are getting in on the act. This sticker claiming to reduce phone radiation by "up to 95%" retailed for $59.95 at Chemist Warehouse. The ATMA and ARPANSA warn that such products are ineffective. If the sticker did reduce radiation, the phone could simply compensate by emitting a stronger signal. Effectiveness would also depend very much upon which side of the user's head the tower was on. If the solution was so simple why do phone manufacturers not incorporate it into their products?
