EMR Aware is a not-for-profit association based in Byron Shire on the Northcoast of NSW Australia. In addition to relaying the latest news from contacts worldwide, our group provides commentary on local issues, as well as a range of free community-oriented services. The latter include educational literature, audiovisual presentations, and a DVD containing thousands of research studies on the adverse effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR).
The Electronic Hug
While numerous experts and health organisations caution about exposing young children to radio frequencies, there appears to be no meaningful protection against a new range of products targeted at them. The vest pictured below transmits baby's biometric data to a smartphone. If all is not well, the parent or carer pushes a button, air sacs inflate, and baby gets a calming hug. This operation could result in lost parental bonding, and kids primed to compulsively seek gratification through technology.
The third link below is a slideshow of similar devices. If the trend toward "wearable technology" accelerates, we run the risk of being monitored and profiled on a previously unimaginable scale, with real time biological data going into potentially exploitive and controlling hands. Let's hope the "hug" is not replaced one day by an administered sedative. Impossible you say? Well by handing their mobile phone to crying or restless baby, parents are effectively using its brainwave-modifying, microwave output as an electronic dr-hug.

A recent poll by Adelaide Tonight Today showed 76% of respondents objected to Wi-Fi in schools due to concern over negative health impacts. Is it really worth the risk, given that several reputable studies indicate no gains in learning ability for students, and a rise in classroom behavioural disorders? True learning is a natural evolution that cannot be replaced by a picture-show in your face. Unless, of course, you want to mercilessly distort or co-opt that process, or get rich flogging subsidised technology to clueless bureaucrats.
Now it's on school buses as well. Might as well black out the windows.
Smart Meters
In response to our inquiries, several letters have been received from Essential Energy; the company in NSW who sells electricity to Origin Energy, who sells it to you. They contend there are "no plans" to install smart meters in our distribution area, and additionally are not aware of any EMR health safety testing for same. This is curious, since their website contains a page devoted to the intelligent grid, as well as instructions to electricians on how to install smart meters. http://www.essentialenergy.com.au/asset/cms/pdf/contestableWorks/CEOM8014_52.pdf
There have also been formal trials in several regions of NSW. It is our understanding that, although the official roll-out has yet to commence, customers can already opt to pay for a smart meter to be installed on their premises, to be later fully activated once the network is operational. One could be forgiven for thinking that their planned arrival is well underway. As health-related complaints continue to rise, the State of Victoria has undertaken to conduct an audit of smart meter radiation, as reported in the Herald Sun article below. Queensland has already decided to go with smart meters on a "customer-driven" basis, the network to supposedly become active during July 2015. In the lead-up, industry propaganda will no doubt reach a feverish pitch in an attempt to seduce wary residents with economic incentives and slanted science. As we have experienced elsewhere, they may simply change the goal posts after the fact, leaving everyone stuck with increasingly higher electricity bills and microwave exposure. Would it not have been more sensible for the national broadband (NBN), telephony, TV, and smart grid all share the cost of a first class fibre optic network?
Apart from repeating the "we comply with all regulations" mantra, and obscuring the growing body of adverse scientific findings, industry routinely employs disinformation tactics. One is to state that smart meters only transmit usage data every 15 or 30 minutes in short bursts. This is more or less true. What is not said is that all the meters in any given network constantly emit "network maintenance" signals between each other. Another claim is that they only broadcast for a certain number of minutes in total per day. What they have do here is simply add up the duty cycle of all the narrow digital pulses, thereby compressing a day-long time frame of activity into what seems like less. Don't be fooled. As a bio-active stimulation source, smart meters are virtually continuous, by some estimates over 200,000 events per day.
With revolutionary inventions such as the methane burning "Bloom Box" (above) coming on-line, local production of electricity will become a reality, thereby making us less reliant upon costly and invasive distribution grids and unsafe metering. Unfortunately for Australian electricity companies, they have over-invested in infrastructure and there is now talk of a "death spiral" for the industry as consumer demand continues to drop due to alternative sources of energy and steadily rising prices. Will the Abbott Government try to prop them up past their use-by date by further dropping support for solar and other sustainable energies?

Phone Use Warnings to Customers
The article below reports that Telstra periodically sends text messages to its subscribers to encourage them to take steps to help mimimise their exposure to electromagnetic energy (EME). The SMS encourages customers to head to the Telstra website, where the telecommunications giant has shared information from various health organisations about the potential dangers of heavy mobile phone use.
With the adoption of new rules, Belgium becomes the latest in a rapidly lengthening list of nations to attempt to shield children from mobile phone radiation and inform its citizens about the inherent risks of exposure.

By contrast, a group of Canadian physicians has written to Health Canada about Safety Code 6, the microwave radiation safety guidelines policy. The federal government has invited public comment on its proposed changes, and the doctors, along with a non-profit group called Canadians for Safe Technology (C4ST), say they fail to factor in dozens of studies that demonstrate the harmful effects of exposure to everyday technology, i.e. cellphones, baby monitors, and even cars and refrigerators. "Our very strong message is that this safety code fails to protect Canadians from their own cellphones", Frank Clegg, CEO of C4ST, told an Ottawa news conference. Two Million New Hotspots
How much Wi-Fi coverage is too much? EHS - The New Epidemic?
Court rulings in several countries have now validated claims for personal injury based upon "electro-hyper sensitivity" (EHS). The plaintiffs experienced symptoms attributed to exposure to EMR, such as microwaves from wireless devices. A growing number of respected scientists are lending their support to a genuine cause-effect relationship as opposed to the dismissive explanation of EHS being a purely psychological condition.
A recnet case in Germany over-rode the previously steadfast defense of "we abide by INCIRP guidelines" by accepting expert testimony that adverse effects occur far lower than at the specified "safe" field intensities. In addition to civil hearings exists the Common Law option whereby any person can be held liable for damage or injury if forewarned of same. It is worth mentioning that the term "EHS" was contrived by industry sympathisers to bring to suggest some kind of obscure allergy, experienced only by fussy hypochondriacs. Where Are the Greens?
The renown scientist Dr. Robert O Becker called electro-pollution the greatest polluting element on the earth today. So where does our "pro-environment" party stand on this issue? Apparently nowhere. A dozen letters inquiring about their policy have surprisingly gone unanswered. Maybe it has something to do with their support for smart meters as "energy saving" devices. It appears they jumped on-board with the big end of town before examining the impacts upon health and privacy. They made the same move with the negative effects of infrasound from wind turbines. All that purports to conserve energy or save the planet is not "green", or without unsavory side-effects. If we cannot stimulate open discussion of the facts, do they really deserve our support?

One organisation does care about our intrinsic rights and wellbeing. From all accounts, our somewhat "green" local Council is still investigating establishment of a Wi-Fi network for public areas in our town centres. If you have not already done so, why not make your views known by emailing your Councillors? Tell them this is NOT a vote winner, especially with smart meters and NBN wireless towers on the horizon as major issues. Do they support these as well? All to be deciding factors perhaps at the next election.
